Baby Jack

I've successfully scooped People magazine and the National Enquirer for photos of Jay's new son, Jack.

They didn't cost too much, either.

Thanks to Jay for passing along not only some pictures, but his accounts of a very tense, scary at times, and thrilling ride as Jack came into the world.

Here's what Jay had to say...

John "Jack" William Capron IV was born into the world (Tuesday) morning at 3:12am. He weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 and 3/4 inches long.

It was a pretty crazy turn of events.

Dev's due date was last Friday so we went in yesterday afternoon for a check-up. Her blood pressure was high and so they took her in for observation. They discovered there was a low amount of amniotic fluid so they decided to induce labor.

She was induced at around 6pm, got an epideral at 11pm, and then things went crazy. Her blood pressure was high, then low, and the baby's heart was high and low. I just dozed off for about 15 minutes at 2:45am or so when the alarms went off and they were losing the baby's heartbeat.

The doctors rushed in and yelled, "We have to get the baby out now!" They rushed Devon to the emergency room and the nurse started throwing surgical scrubs at me.

They had her open and the baby out in minutes, but we both held our breath because the baby was bluish and didn't cry right away. Then all of the sudden he cried, and of course, so did we.

It's the type of moment in life that is beyond words.

It's A Boy!

UPDATE: This man is now a daddy. Jay Capron, and his wife Devon, went to the hospital yesterday to have their first baby.

With Devon being a few days past her due date, doctors decided to induce.

Things went well, but there was a rough patch early this morning. The baby's heart started to slow down, so they had to do an emergency C-section.

Good news, though, as everyone is healthy and doing just fine. Jay and Devon are now proud parents of a baby boy.

John "Jack" William Capron IV - clocking in at 7 lbs., 15 oz, -- was born just a few hours ago. Jay called in at around 6:15 a.m. with the happy news.

Keep listening for more details, and keep checking the blog for pictures.

Congratulations, Jay! We always knew you were a first class mutha -- now, you're a father.

You'll love it.

*** For the 80's Escape today, I thought it was appropriate to play John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" in honor of the occasion.

Heroes West Will Feed Your Office

Beginning this Friday, we'll be awarding lunch for a party of four from an area business at Heroes West Sports Grill in Joliet.

It's part of our newest promotion, "Feed Your Office".

It's simple. Each week, we'll accumulate faxes on company letterhead -- from your office -- that must have a business name, contact person, phone number...the essentials. Fax it to 815-941-9000.

Then, on Friday mornings, I'll select one of those faxes for a lunch giveaway. The winner will receive a lunch party for four at Heroes West.

It's right off of I-80 at Houbolt road. They're open everyday at 11:00 a.m., and it's a great spot to get a sandwich, salad, burger, or whatever, and watch a ballgame. I recommend the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

Oops, that's Sandwedge. Sports theme, you know.

Here's a printable menu.

So, grab some company letterhead, and fax us at 815-941-9000 so you can be in the drawing for the prize. We'll give one away each Friday.

Good luck.

*** Back at it after a few days away. I was surprised to see Jay's car in the lot when I got here this morning. Still no baby yet.

Thanks for participating in our webpoll question regarding what the baby will be, a boy or a girl. 63% said girl.

I was tempted to add a few other options to that question -- "both", "an alien", "the mailman's" -- but played it straight, instead.

*** The birthday tie-in for today was a classic from 1978. Yvonne Elliman turns 57 today, and we played her disco-hit, "If I Can't Have You".

*** For The 80's Escape, I just felt like playing the "Safety Dance", from Men Without Hats.

And, any song that makes Turk from Scrubs dance, is alright by me.

Here Come The 'Hawks

Cheer up, Bears' fans. At least you're not Lions' fans.

And, now that the Bears' season is over, and the Bulls are stuck in neutral, turn your attention to the Blackhawks. On the same day Da Bears' season came to an end, the 'Hawks won their franchise record ninth straight game.

It's hard to believe a team that's been around for so long has never had a win streak reach nine games.

Of course, we can take partial credit for keeping the streak alive, as since Jay Capron and his dad went to the Blackhawks game earlier this month, the team -- counting that game -- is 8-0.

Plus, they'll have the national spotlight on New Year's Day. Well, the part that isn't dominated by college football bowl games. The 'Hawks are hosting Detroit at noon at Wrigley Field.

Holy Cow.

It's a great event just because of the setting, but the 'Hawks and Red Wings just happen to be two of the top three teams in the Western Conference.

It might not snow in Chicago on January 1st, as it did during last year's outdoor game, but it should be a great atmosphere, anyway.

What a great way to get 2009 off to a fantastic start! Open the morning by listening to the morning show from 5:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (complete with new themes, with everything played a tad softer to compensate for your hangover), followed by the 'Hawks and 'Wings at noon.

Cap it off by catching the Top 50 Songs of 2008 Countdown that runs from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on 95.7 FM, WJDK.

So, put the Bears clothes in hibernation, and commit to the Indian. Plenty of room on the bandwagon.

Taking A Few Days Off...

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas. Besides being sick -- physically now, as well as mentally, right? -- My day was fine.

The girls got up around 7 a.m., headed downstairs, and once I got the video camera rolling, opened their gifts.

There were smiles, shrieks, yelps, and a lot of "oh wow"s, and "cool!'s", so I think they liked what they got.

Since I didn't want to get my in-laws sick -- a case of pneumonia really did a number on my father-in-law recently -- I decided it was best to stay home while my wife and the kids went to her parents' house.

It gave me a chance to rest. In other words, cook and clean.

I started to watch Michael Clayton on demand, but halfway through, they came back home. Drats. Another missed opportunity to watch an R-rated movie.

I'm feeling better this morning, and today is kind of like Christmas for me, as my family is coming over for gifts, food, and spirits. Can't wait.

I'm off from work until Monday, but I'll try to throw some new things on here between now and then.

If I hear from Jay about a new baby in the Capron house, I'll get pictures up here as soon as I can.

Don't forget to get your vote in on the poll question.

Talk to you on Monday.

Seasons Greetings

It's nice to be back on the air. The Christmas Eve show is one of my favorites, and hopefully you guys enjoy the show as well.

Stay tuned beginning at noon today, and throughout Christmas Day, for continuous Christmas music.

It's been a rough year with the economy, and a rough few days with the weather, but we're hoping you'll find plenty of happiness and good times during the holidays, and into the new year.

Jay and I just wanted to thank everyone for listening, and for visiting the blog.

We have more fun things for you to enjoy in the coming year, and as we suggested in an earlier post, now that we've reached the end of the year, it's a perfect time to take some suggestions from you regarding the show. Things you like, dislike, want more of, etc.

Send them here.

This will be my last morning show until Monday, and Jay is set to take off for a week at any moment, as his wife is due to give birth on the 26th.

But, we'll keep the blog updated -- watch for baby pictures -- so make sure you keep coming back, and spread the word!

Merry Christmas, everyone.

Outage Update Part II

Okay, so it turns out WJDK is back on the air. So much for ComEd restore time estimations.

So, with 95.7 FM back on, that's where I am this afternoon, for at least a little while.

As long as WJDK stays on -- and these days, that's not an easy assumption -- then that means we will have the Christmas Eve show after all.

Oops, I may have just jinxed it again.

WJDK Outage Update

Well, I guess I jinxed myself when I bragged over the weekend that we'd be on the air for you throughout the holiday, compared to a lot of jocks across your dial that are on vacation this week and next.

WJDK is dealing with a power outage at our transmitter site, and from what we've been told, we may not be back on the air until Wednesday night.

In the meantime, you can tune in to 103.1 FM, WCSJ this afternoon from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., as I'll be on the air spinning Christmas tunes on the voice of Grundy County.

It's been awhile since I've done any kind of show on 'CSJ. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and it can be a four hour combination of music, info, and general holiday tidings, and not an afternoon of blizzard coverage.

As for WJDK, I may not be on the air again there until Monday morning, as I'm off Christmas day through the weekend.

Please keep checking the blog as I'll be updating that through the holiday, and beyond.

Crash And Burn(ed)

Where should I begin?

* We've been off the air since the middle of the weekend thanks to power lines being down at our transmitter site. Hopefully we'll be up and running at some point today, but I have no idea when.

* Sunday morning I get a call from Kevin Schramm alerting me that our main production computer had crashed.

Without getting too technical on you, basically, every commercial that we air is created in our production computer, or the DCS.

The good news, just about all of our commercials were saved. But, anything that was simply stored on the production computer -- and not sent to both the WCSJ and WJDK on-air computers -- is lost forever.

In other words, I lost a ton of sound Sunday.

A lot of the effects, bits, and other non-commercial items are gone. It's my own fault for not backing up those sounds, but to back up these audio clips, you'd have to re-record them, in real time, onto another source, and then save it.

* I've been fighting a cold the last few days, with last night being my worst night as far as sleep is concerned.

* And, the Eagles blew a perfect opportunity to control their playoff destiny yesterday by laying an egg in Washington and losing to the Redskins 10-3.

Sunday, Bloody Sunday.

So, now I'm sitting in the studio, twiddling my thumbs waiting for our signal to come back. It has allowed me the chance to catch up on some things I don't normally get a chance to do.

Ironically, this would have been a perfect time to start archiving some old audio from our DCS unit before it crashes. Oops.

Weekend Notes

*** Here's something to remember next week -- and the week after -- when surfing around from radio station to radio station: Most of the hosts on Chicago stations will be off the next few weeks for Christmas vacation.

Jay and I? We'll be here, on the air for all of your holiday needs.

Granted, we'll be off Christmas day, and I'll be taking the 26th and 27th off, and Jay is due for a week off when his wife has their baby, which could be any day now...but you get the idea.

For the most part, we will be on the air in the morning to help get you to and through the holidays.

*** I have a few holiday favorites of mine that I like to do on the show leading up to Christmas day, and we'll be bringing a lot of those to you either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

"Green Christmas", "Santa Claus and His Old Lady", "I Yust Go Nuts For Christmas", "Twas The Night Before Christmas (Technically Correct)", "Christmas Dragnet", and more, plus my reading of "Yes, Virginia" will all make their appearance this week.

On the Christmas Eve show, we'll probably go non-stop, or at least very close to non-stop Christmas music. I tend to lean more toward the standards on that day. There are a few instrumental medleys and songs that I like to play as well, so hopefully you'll enjoy it.

If you have any suggestions on things you'd like to hear, whether it's a song, or a bit, or whatever, email me.

*** Maybe this is a good time as well to offer you a chance to send along any things that you would want (from the show or this blog) for Christmas. We always welcome feedback from you guys, but don't always get much.

That is most likely a good sign -- no news is good news -- but take a moment now, think about the show, and what you've been reading here the last few weeks, and feel free to be honest and let us know the things you like, and the things you don't like.

We'll sift through your thoughts and do our best to present a better show and blog for you in 2009.

To send along your ideas and comments, just click here and email us.

Show Biz: Friday 12/19/08

*** Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire is celebrating a birthday today. Well, he's having a birthday today. Who knows, he could be really depressed about it.

The birthday gave us an excuse to bring you "Shining Star", the song that spawned the immortal Elaine "little kicks" dance on Seinfeld.

*** Michael Penn was our artist on the 80's Escape today.

Brother Sean just earned a SAG nomination for his role in Milk, so, our really long stretch for a tie-in gives us one of the songs from the late 80's that I always enjoyed playing on my college radio station, "No Myth".

Tune In For Closings

Stay tuned to the morning show today for all of the latest information concerning school closings, cancellations, delays and everything else -- including weather updates.

And, again, try not to call us, as it slows down our ability to get the info and pass it along.

We'll mention the closings every 10 minutes or so, so please be patient.

Thanks, and drive safe!

Show Biz: Thursday 12/18/08

*** Congratulations to Kim Doglio of Coal City, the winner of this year's $500 Holiday Shopping Spree. We drew Kim's name at 6:50 a.m., and she called in within a few minutes.

Kim, who was already listening to the station when her name was announced, now gets to spend that money at our participating sponsors over the next few days.

Congratulations, Kim.

Please include a gift receipt for whatever you get for us.

I'm kidding. Just get gift receipts for my gifts.

*** Today's announcement meant we were short-changed on the birthday segment. For one, the segment began late. Also, we took Kim's call in the middle of the segment.

Apologies to those that were waiting to send along happy birthday wishes to friends and family. Call back tomorrow.

*** We're supposed to get hit today with a big-time ice storm, which means there is a very good chance that we'll have school cancellations tomorrow morning.

I know it's tempting to call us to see if your school is closed.

Please don't.

It's usually just myself, Jay, and Kevin up here in the morning. On bad weather days, we'll bring in Sheree -- our Community Calendar and office all-star -- to handle some phone calls, but with just the three, or four of us here, it's pretty hectic in the morning when the weather is bad.

While doing our shows, we're taking calls to tell us schools are closed, then trying to relay that information to both stations, to Jay, all the while hoping that our song or commercial break isn't ending while we're at the copy machine, etc.

So, the fewer calls you make to us asking if your school is open or closed would help greatly.

Trust us, we will be updating the list of closings on the air for you every 10 minutes or so. Just tune in, and you'll know all you need to know.

Assuming we all make it to work tomorrow.

*** Whoa! Didn't mean to startle you. This photo is still spooking me out, and I'm the one that put it here in the first place.

Yikes.

Today is Keith Richards' birthday. He turns 65, and doesn't look a day over 80.

This is either a photo of Keith, or the recent face transplant patient. Not sure.

To honor Keith, we cranked it up a bit on the 80's Escape, and brought you a Rolling Stones song that features one of Keith's greatest opening riffs...

"Start Me Up"

The "Bush Attacked By Reporter" Video

Photobucket

Who knew there was snow in Baghdad?

Shopping Spree Grand Prize Thursday!

Hilarity will ensue Thursday morning at 6:50 a.m. when Jay and I join forces with Kevin Schramm to announce the winner of the 2008 Holiday Shopping Spree - a prize worth $500.

It's always fun when the three of us get to be on air at the same time. We sometimes get so lost in telling jokes, making silly comments, and taking light-hearted jabs at each other, we usually run the risk of forgetting to, you know, announce the winner.

In the old days, the "simulcast" of the station went like this: at the appropriate time, I would push a button that allowed the WCSJ audio to go over the air on WJDK. At that point, I'd get up from my microphone, walk across the office and sit at a microphone in Schramm's studio, and we would do the announcement in the same room.

This was due to a simple technology flaw, as my studio was equipped with the means to bring WCSJ audio onto my soundboard, while Kevin's board didn't have that capability.

So, the resulting transitions weren't always the smoothest, especially at the end of the bit, when Kevin would have to talk for the ten seconds it would take for me to get back to my room.

Things are much easier now, as we each have the ability to bring the other studio's audio onto our own soundboards, or to put it in simple terms, we can now turn each other on, instead of me just turning Kevin on.

Or, something like that.

So, amidst all of the yuks, wisecracks, and buffoonery tomorrow, try to sift through all of that frivolity and listen for your name for the grand prize. You'll have 15 minutes to call in and win once your name is announced.

Good luck.

Show Biz: Wednesday 12/17/08

*** Faithful listener Roger Turman emailed a song request for his wife, Demetra's birthday today - "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison.

Sabrina and Jonathan also were a part of the wish, and we honored that request by playing the classic this morning.

*** Sarah Dallin of Bananarama turns 47 today. For the 80's Escape today, we played a song, and "Venus" was its name.

It was a back and forth battle for me in 1986 trying to figure out which girl group was the most pleasing to the eye: Bananarama, The Bangles, or the Go-Go's. Dallin might be sad to learn that since The Bangles had Susanna Hoffs, and the Go-Go's had Belinda Carlisle, Bananaram usually finished a distant 3rd.

I'm sure she's over it.

Christmas Gift Numbers

I've talked about it several times on the show, but I feel the need to post this very useful information on the web, so that people all across the world can utilize this method of labeling their gifts on Christmas day, for generations to come.

My little way of making the world a better place.

Or, something like that.

Truth is, my family has been doing gifts this way for a very long time. It's fun, easy, and mysterious. Like Angelina Jolie in the good 'ol days.

Here's how it works...instead of simply placing name tags on gifts, you place a number. No names, just numbers. This way, nobody has any idea which gifts go to which person. Well, the person in charge of the list knows, but that's it.

So, instead of looking under the tree and within minutes knowing how many, or how few gifts you have, you end up having no idea. Thus, the mystery. You see a big box in the corner of the room and hope its yours, but you won't know until the moment that gift is about to be opened.

My dad usually keeps the master list, but since my brother and I each are living in our own places now, we each have lists, too, for the gifts we've purchased. It's a minor flaw, as we all have a sense after a few minutes, which gifts -- based on wrapping paper used, or handwriting with the numbers -- are from which person, but we still have no idea who they belong to.

The trick is trying to have all of the gifts blend in -- both in appearance, and numbers chosen -- so that it becomes difficult to know at first glance which gifts are coming from which person, but it's not as easy as it used to be.

So, once my family comes over, they start to put gifts under our tree, and we add our gifts for them as well.

There ends up being dozens and dozens of gifts uner the tree, all numbered one thru whatever, and one of us starts by selecting a gift. The number is called out, my dad says who it belongs to, and that person opens their gift.

Then they select the next gift, and it goes on from there. One gift at a time. As a fan of opening gifts, I never want to see that last gift opened. Anything that drags it out is fine with me.

As a kid, you probably did this too: You'd rip through however many gifts you had in about ten minutes, and then it was all over. Kind of a letdown. Take your time. It's like eating a big steak, you want to take your time with it, not shove it all down your throat in two minutes. Savor it.

That's how this works. My folks and my brother come over around 10:00am, we put out the gifts, then we eat a nice breakfast, then we settle down for gift opening around noon. One by one the gifts are opened, and it usually wraps up around dinner time.

As we get down to the last few gifts, again nobody knows if they've opened up all of their gifts or not, it starts to get tense, wondering who gets what of the remaining presents.

Maybe this isn't for you. But, maybe you're intrigued and are willing to try it for a year. Hopefully this was a good explanation.

If not, do you have my number?

*** Benny Andersson of ABBA turns 62 today. I tried -- unsuccessfully -- to locate some ABBA Christmas music, so we played "Take A Chance On Me" instead during the birthday segment.

And, upon further review, I discovered that ABBA did have some stuff in their Christmas catalog...

"Like An Angel Passing Through My Room"

ABBA saying Merry Christmas

ABBA going for yuletide yuks on the Mike Yarwood Show

*** The 80's Escape today featured "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" by Sting.

Watch Christmas Specials Online

Have you missed one of your favorite Christmas specials on TV? Maybe we can help.

There are 101 Christmas shows, specials, and more at this site, that are viewable online.

I've been looking for the 2008 version -- this list was updated last year -- but I wanted to put this up now in case the new version comes too late for everyone to be able to see everything before the big day.

This list is pretty comprehensive. Videos are broken down into categories, including essentials, cartoons animation and puppets, documentaries, old school, parodies, sitcoms, and a lot more.

Everything from Rudolph and A Christmas Story -- and if those are your favorite specials, don't forget to vote for them on our web poll question before December 22nd -- to obscure stuff like the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special, or my favorite, the Star Wars Holiday Special.

It's an amazing list. Granted, some of the links may not work since the list was assembled a year ago, but if you have some time to kill, or some little kids at home that have missed, or never even seen some of these classics, it's a real treat.

Where else would they be able to enjoy such holiday favorites as the Rambo cartoon, "When S.A.V.A.G.E. Stole Santa", or The Facts Of Life - It's A Wonderful Christmas

The Osmonds Are Hotter Than Ever

So, Entertainment Tonight has released it's Hot List for 2008. It's based on who received the most coverage and mentions on the show within the past year.

Take a look at the list...

1. Britney Spears
2. Oprah Winfrey
3. Brad Pitt
4. Barack Obama
5. Angelina Jolie
6. George Clooney
7. Tom Cruise
8. Donny Osmond
9. Jennifer Aniston
10. Julianne Hough
11. Hillary Clinton
12. Marie Osmond
13. Miley Cyrus
14. Madonna
15. Katie Holmes
16. John McCain
17. America Ferrera
18. Michelle Obama
19. Will Smith
20. Valerie Bertinelli

What am I missing here? It's 2008, and Donny Osmond got the 8th most mentions on Entertainment Tonight this year? Or is this the list from 1976?

Marie Osmond finished 12th? I know she was on Dancing With The Stars not too long ago, but 12th?

I'm so flabbergasted that not one, but two Osmonds cracked the top 20 that I'm completely ignoring the fact that Valerie Bertinelli finished 20th.

Kudos to the Osmonds, I guess.

Although, maybe there's something to it. That's twice now in this month alone that Donny has been mentioned on this blog.

Let's face it, this is Donny Osmond's world. We're just living in it.

*** Hats off to Bob, winner of Survivor: Gabon. After being given new life thanks to Sugar's plan to have the two of them vote for Matty at the last Tribal Council, forcing a tie as Matty and Susie voted for Bob, the physics teacher defeated Susie 4 votes to 3 for the million dollar prize.

Not bad for a 57-year old, wafer thin guy, who looked like a prime candidate for "first person voted off" when the show began.

But as the season progressed, Bob -- a very likeable champ -- started to dominate the game, winning challenges, and friendships at the most opportune time.

Plus, he did all of it while wearing a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Remarkable.

This show has been on for 18 different seasons over the last nine years, and we still watch it every week. Our daughter, Megan said to me last night that I should try to go on the show.

I laughed. Although I do enjoy watching it, I have no interest in going on the show as a contestant.

I'd be ready to leave after the first night. Heck, after the first few bugs started to bite me within the first few minutes of getting off the boat, I'd be ready to pack it in.

*** Our birthday tie-in today was The Supremes. Singer Cindy Byrdsong turns 69 on this date, and as with some past birthdays this month, we were able to offer a Christmas tune from that artist.

The Supremes did a version of "Silver Bells" that we played at the end of the segment.

*** The 80's Escape was an all-time classic. 1986 was a magical year in the music industry. That was in the era when actors thought they could sing, and actually had chart success that is to this day completely unfathomable.

Bruce Willis, Eddie Murphy, Patrick Swayze, the list goes on.

Today is Don Johnson's birthday, so naturally, "Heartbeat" was the choice.

If you liked that, you'll love his Miami Vice partner, Phillip Michael Thomas' smash hit that nobody ever heard of from 1985.

It's worth it for just the first 10 seconds of the video as Thomas does the robot dance. God, I miss the 80's.

Welcome Home, Marc

Lance Corporal Marc Olson of Coal City has returned from Iraq, a month after suffering serious injuries in a suicide bomb attack.

The 20-year old Marine had head, neck, and eye injuries and was treated at the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland.

Welcome home, Marc. Get well soon!

Show Biz: Friday 12/12/08

*** And, what did you do to celebrate Sheila E's birthday? Well, we celebrated by playing "The Glamorous Life" during the 80's Escape.

The 1984 hit was Sheila E's biggest single as a solo artist.

She's also known for being a part of Prince's band in the mid to late 80's.

I always had bigger hopes for Sheila E. Think about it. Name five famous female drummers. Name two. There was Sheila E., and, who? Karen Carpenter?

But, as I look back on Sheila E's career, did she really reach any kind of peak in the world of female drumming, or was she just the "champion" by default.

Don't worry, I don't lose any sleep over it -- just food for thought. I mean, it's not like I'm banging my head against the wall thinking about it, or banging my head against a drum, I guess.

*** The birthday tie-in featured Dionne Warwick, who turns 68 today. With it being the holiday season, we rolled out her version of "Winter Wonderland".

*** I'll get my first look at the undefeated Seneca boys basketball team tonight. I'll be on the call when Seneca hosts Herscher. The game can be heard on our sister station, 103.1 FM, WCSJ.

We'll have reaction from that game, plus a whole bunch of other local sports goodies for you tomorrow morning on Spotlight On Sports at 9:00 a.m.

*** Jay went to the Blackhawks game last night.

Good to see he's committing to the Indian.

Yes, the Hawks are relevant again, and they won last night 2-0 over Ottawa.

Jay was right, he and his dad did have great seats.

Here's their view of the opening faceoff...

During our discussion this morning, I rolled out the play-by-play clips I did during a visit to the old Chicago Stadium in my college days. Those clips are running for a few days on our morning show promo, and might get a replay at 5:30 a.m., Friday.

Yeah, I'd bring a little cassette recorder under my jacket and call play-by-play in a bit of a Pat Foley impression. Those were high times for the Hawks and their fans.

My buddies and I would try to get to at least one playoff game per round, and in those days, you could count on the Hawks going a few rounds deep in the NHL playoffs.

The stadium was always packed, and just dripped with energy. This was late 80's to early 90's when the Hawks were perennial Stanley Cup contenders.

For those that never made it to the Chicago Stadium for a hockey game, you really missed out, and there will never be another building like it.

Hopefully the noise was so deafening that the people sitting around us -- or standing, as during a lot of games we would choose to get standing room tickets above the organ -- weren't too offended by my play-by-play (ad)venture.

I was either just a dweeb, or a prophet.

Probably a bit of both.

Here's another pic from last night's game. Jay is on the left and his dad is on the right...

Ummm, Jay and his dad are the two guys in the foreground.

*** For the music fans out there, today's birthday tie-in was a no-brainer. Brenda Lee turned 64 today, so we went with the classic "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree".

I had to. In fact, my FCC license may have evaporated if I didn't play that song at that exact moment.

*** The 80's Escape was a favorite of mine. Jermaine Jackson also had a birthday today, so we offered his monster smash, "Let's Get Serious".

There are so many wonderful things about the video below, even beyond Jermaine's outfit, but my favorite is the fact that he felt the need to lip sync Stevie Wonder's lines.

But, as fun as that video was, I enjoyed this one better - musically at least. It's just a dude playing the bass riffs of the song. Well done.

The Air Supply Video

After playing "All Out Of Love" by Air Supply this morning, I felt compelled to post the classic infomercial video that Jay and I have mentioned many times on the show.

The video is part of our Youtube channel that I reminded you about -- along with several other new links -- in an earlier post.

Our favorite part, among many, is the pitcher of lemonade.

Now, whenever an Air Supply song plays during the day, Jay or myself will simply stand up, catch the other one's attention, and mimic the pouring of a glass of lemonade.

*** Just a couple of items that I didn't get the chance to put on here yesterday...

The birthday tie-in was a bit of a reach. The drummer for The Commodores, George "Clyde" Orange turned 62 yesterday. We played "Sail On".

Gotta love Lionel's hair.

*** For the 80's Escape, really went for a stretch on this one. Stumbled upon a 1988 song by Tanita Tikarum called "Twist In My Sobriety". It was a song that we played at my college radio station, and I hadn't heard it in awhile.

It hit #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 Modern Rock Charts, which qualifies it as only a moderate "hit", even within the genre of modern rock.

But it did reach #2 in Germany, for whatever that's worth.

Updated Blog

Hope you're enjoying the blog, which has been up and running for almost two months now.

Just a heads up to some additions that I've made to the "linkage" section on the right hand side.

A couple of years ago, I had the chance to interview Rick Springfield, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, and Kathy Kinney on the show. Once those interviews had aired, I transcribed the bulk of each interview, and placed it on another blog that I write.

The links to those interviews are now in "linkage".

Also, we've created a Youtube channel that features some of the favorite videos of Jay and I. There aren't a lot of clips in there yet, but we'll add to it over time, so keep checking it for more.

One of our favorites is the Air Supply infomercial that we've referenced many times.

The link to the Youtube channel is also to your right.

As always, the poll question can be found on the right hand side, plus the 95.7 ALERTS that keep you informed on different things going on at WJDK, as well as a link for you to email us comments or suggestions.

Thanks for coming, and spread the word.

Pucker Up

First turkeys, now pigs.

Keep listening to 95.7 FM, WJDK for the chance to win a pig, well, more accurately, a ham from Mazon Grocers.

Over the next few days we'll offer you the chance to "kiss a pig" on the air. If you're successful, you win the ham from Mazon Grocers.

For more details, stay tuned.

Menards Remote

Just a friendly reminder that I'll be at the Morris Menards this Saturday from 10a-12p.

During the broadcast on 95.7 FM, WJDK, we'll be giving away prizes, talking to some of the fine folks at Menards about hardware, and helping you with any home projects you have.

Well, the folks at Menards will, I won't.

The WJDK Spinning Wheel will be making an appearance, and you can get your hands on some official, and tasty, WJDK 95.7 FM water. Menards is a big store, and there will be a lot to do, see, and buy. You'll probably work up a thirst.

Stop out and say hi.

Aren't You Proud To Be From Illinois?

Maybe Rod Blagojevich thought that as Governor of Illinois, he was supposed to be a crook. He was just following the pattern. A nice recap from the AP...

Three former Illinois governors have gone to prison in the past 35 years.

_Otto Kerner, a Democrat who was governor from 1961 to 1968, served less than a year of a three-year sentence after his 1973 conviction on bribery, tax evasion and other counts. He was convicted of arranging favorable horse racing dates as governor in return for getting horse racing association stock at reduced prices. Kerner died in 1976.

_Dan Walker, a Democrat who was governor from 1973 to 1977, served 1 1/2 years of a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty in 1987 to bank fraud, misapplication of funds and perjury. The charges were not related to his service as governor.

_George Ryan, a Republican who was governor from 1999 to 2003, was convicted of corruption in 2006 for steering state contracts and leases to political insiders while he was Illinois secretary of state and then governor. He is serving a 6 1/2-year prison term.

In addition, William Stratton, governor from 1953-1961, was later indicted but was acquitted on charges of income tax evasion.

Thanks, Blogo, for upholding such a proud tradition.

A programming note: At 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, I'll be replaying a good chunk of the press conference from today.

Of course, there will be more in Jay's newscasts, and probably some stuff from ABC at the top of each hour on 95.7 FM, WJDK.

*** Happy birthday to Donny Osmond. I'm sure my wife has been smiling all morning. My daughters like him, too. They watch the DVD of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat fairly often -- Osmond plays Joseph.

We saw him when he was touring that show in Chicago many moons ago.

Our tie-in this morning was a slam dunk. How can you go wrong with a Donny Osmond Christmas tune? We went with his version of "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year".

*** Our internet was down for a few hours this morning, so apologizes if the show was running (even) slower than usual. Tough day to be without internet, considering all of the breaking news surrounding Gov. Blagojevich.

Some of the juicy details so far, courtesy of the Chicago Tribune...
  • Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, were arrested today by FBI agents on federal corruption charges...that included Blagojevich conspiring to sell or trade the Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama in exchange for financial benefits for the governor and his wife. The governor was also accused of obtaining campaign contributions in exchange for other official actions.
  • Federal prosecutors alleged Blagojevich sought appointment as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the new Obama administration, or a lucrative job with a union in exchange for appointing a union-preferred candidate.
  • Blagojevich and Harris conspired to demand the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members responsible for editorials critical of Blagojevich in exchange for state help with the sale of Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co.
  • Blagojevich and Harris, along with others, obtained and sought to gain financial benefits for the governor, members of his family and his campaign fund in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state jobs and state contracts.
  • Blagojevich also was alleged to be using a favors list, made up largely of individuals and firms that have state contracts or received taxpayer benefits, from which to conduct a $2.5 million fundraising drive before year's end. Even Blagojevich's recently announced $1.8 billion plan for new interchanges and "green lanes" on the Illinois Tollway was subject to corruption, prosecutors alleged.
But, at least his hair looks good.

*** The 80's Escape for today was "In My House" by the Mary Jane Girls

*** Strange. Just one day after I make a post about a pick, poking some fun at the picture in the post below, and tying it in with the classic Seinfeld episode about a nose pick, I read a story today about a man who died - from picking his nose!

British man Ian Bothwell died recently from bleeding to death, a result of picking his nose too much, according to the coroner's report.

I guess his death was snot as simple as it seemed.

*** Today marks the 28th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. I remember watching Monday Night Football that night, when Howard Cosell informed the nation of what had happened.

Being only nine years old at the time, I wasn't very familiar with The Beatles, although I'm sure I knew a few of their songs. However, I was pretty familiar with a couple of the hits from Lennon's album that came out that year, Double Fantasy.

We played one of those songs today on the 80's Escape. Here's an acoustic version of "Watching The Wheels"...

The Pick

Did the Morris Daily Herald catch Morris Mayor Dick Kopczick in a pick?

In last week's story about the Christmas lights at Chapin Park, the above photo was included from the ceremony.

Was the Mayor "cleaning house"?

Well, obviously I'm kidding. Clearly, he's simply adjusting his glasses.

But, I gotta admit, when I first saw the photo -- being the Seinfeld fan that I am -- I couldn't help but think of this clip...

Butt Head

Surfing the web on a cold, lazy Sunday morning, and stumbled upon this. Pun intended.

This may be one of the funniest videos I've seen all year. Apparently it's been floating around the internet for over two years, but today was the first time I'd seen it.

It's so great on so many levels. Not one, but two classic collisions as the drunk in the video gets way too familiar with the walls in the building.

The volume, and damage as a result of the first collision, is colossal, but I think the second collision is funnier. It's like the room is tilted.

Thanks for the laughs, fella. And, oh yeah, don't drive drunk.

Show Biz: Friday 12/05/08

*** Guitar hero Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copyright infringement.

It seems "Satchmo" feels Coldplay's hit "Viva La Vida" is a little too close in sound to his instrumental song "If I Could Fly" from 2004.

Fans of the show may remember "If I Could Fly" was my show's closing theme a couple of years ago.

I hope Joe doesn't read this, because I may owe him some royalty money. Hmmmm, maybe I didn't use that song on my show.

As for Coldplay vs. Satriani, the story we told you about months ago, check this video out to see if you think they sound a little too much alike.

*** R.I.P., Mr. Bentley. Paul Benedict, the actor who played Mr. Bentley on The Jeffersons, passed away Monday at the age of 70.

As far as great comedic performance over the last 30 years, there aren't many in my book that are better than Sherman Helmsley as George Jefferson. Mr. Bentley was a good foil for George.

I guess Benedict is movin' on up to a really deluxe apartment in the sky.

*** The birthday tie-in this morning was "Black Balloon" by Goo Goo Dolls on lead singer Johnny Reznik's birthday.

*** A classic from Steely Dan made the 80's Escape this morning, "Hey Nineteen". I couldn't find the video for it, if there even was one, but you can see many different live -- and cover -- versions of the song here.

Jay's Helmet Headphones

In a fit of rage this morning, due to some audio difficulties that were no fault of his own, Jay threw his headphones off to the side during his WCSJ newscast.

Good thing he had on his Helmet Headphones -- complete with rollbar -- sure to be a holiday highlight under the tree for the young broadcaster in your family.

Those things are indestructible.

Check these out...

Should Jay ever fall out of his chair, and tumble into a summersault, his head will be safe thanks to the two protective bars atop his head.

Or, if ceiling tiles should start to fall unexpectedly while in the midst of a newscast, Jay can keep reading without missing a beat as those tiles will ricochet off his head, and fall harmlessly to the floor.

I think they also double as a luggage rack.

These headphones -- formally Schramm's -- are temporary ones, but hopefully whatever pair Jay chooses next will have similar head protection.

An airbag, maybe. Something.

The headphones also serve Jay very well when he hits the gridiron as quarterback of the WJDK football team...

"Hut, hut, hut...HIKE!!!"

Wearing headphones like this would also be smart to protect Jay from the countless times he smashes his mouth against the microphone.

Smash Mouth Headline News, with Jay Capron.

So, grab them while you can, folks, before they fly off the shelves this Christmas...the Helmet Headphones.
